I have a family full of readers. My son has actually gotten to the point where we have read the same books so many times he reads them by memory. My feisty daughter still has a limited vocabulary, so when she wants us to read to her, we usually discover this when she shoves a book in our face. If we don't pay immediate attention, the book then gets thrown at us. So, I was so excited to find IBW........
IBW, or interactive Book-Webscene, is a fantastic set of stories that use a new and unique storytelling process that combines printed text with the interactivity of the web! It is so simple, and so fun. You read a chapter from the book, and at the end of the chapter you find a link. You head over to the weblink and you find a webscene, usually an animation, that is a very important part of the story. This continues chapter after chapter. My son couldn't wait to get to each new webscene, enhancing his love of reading that much more!
I received two different IBW titles, Busy Preschoolers Celebrations of letters G and H, and Coming Home, a KA reader 8. The busy preschoolers are perfect for my son right now. He is only just about 3, but already knows and recognizes his letters, so the perfect thing now is to have him learn how to trace them. He really liked the little poem that went with H is for hands. It was so cute with little clues on how to guess what the word was (hand) and had different motions that we could do together. He did it all perfectly, and made me giggle at the end when I read "with all of these clues do you know who I am?" and before I could get to the next sentence of "I knew you could guess me, I am your _____", he excitedly yelled "you are mommy!" After this we headed to the corresponding web scene. We were both pleasantly surprised to find the cute little puzzle. My son LOVES puzzles, and one this small was great to help him not feel frustrated. We then headed to the trace part. Little man still doesn't have quite the dexterity that he needs for the mouse, but he was able to tell me which animal we needed to follow next, and he traced what I was doing with his finger. And guess what!? IBW is so wonderful that they are letting you get a sneak peak of this as well. Head on over to www.BusyPreschoolers.com/h. If you hover over English, you will get a drop down of parental insructions. If you go to the bottom, this is where you will find the trace option. Warning, tough, my son and daughter made me read the story and play this game over and over and over.
The other book was a KA reader titled "Coming Home". The KA readers are fantastic for helping develop vocabulary through word families. They are not only great for beginning readers, but they are perfect for even little one's like my guy as read-to-me stories. They currently have nine titles, and are working on more! There are fantastic step-by-step lessons that are great for parents to understand what their parents are learning and when. You pick what is appropriate for your little learner and when. This is a perfect match for homeschoolers! When you go to the webscene for each chapter, there are great pop up words. IBW explained them as basically interactive, online flashcards. I can't describe it any better.
My little man actually watched his 3 times. He was SO focused on what was on the screen. We went over what the words where, and what they were doing to relate it to the story. I will take this over ANY cartoon any day. My ladybug, only a year now, was just as intrigued.I am telling you that these two stared at this like it was a forbidden cartoon. There is nothing but good that can come from her staring at the screen as words that pointed to pictures popped up.You can see a chapter webscene at http://www.ka-reader.com/8-4/. This is showing the part of the story where the beaver is building the dam.
