Potty training from the eyes of an unsuccessful mother

Well, I can brag my kids are cute, I can brag how smart they are, but I sure can't say anything about my skills at potty training. So come join me, if you will. Cry along, laugh at me, or allow a "I'm better than you" smile to spread across your face as you read the frustrations of this potty-training momma!

1. Begin the WHOLE process armed with new underwear that little man picked out himself, lots of prizes for incentive, full faith this will be easy, the Elmo Potty DVD, and the advice of friends and some books.
2. Try the whole 3 day thing. Ask if he has to go potty a lot, let him run naked if he wants to...whatever it takes. Lots of stickers, a little less patience, but whole lotta love and encouragement.
3. After WEEKS of hearing "I have to go potty" after it has already occurred, throw up your hands and put the trusty diapers back on. The water bill can't handle all of the laundry.
4. Months later, attempt again. Pull out the underwear, swear to never buy diapers again, and purchase the pull-ups that you SWORE you never would.
5. Get excited that little man actually tells you he has to go, and even more excited that he finally shows signs he is holding it-like the pee pee dance.
6. Withhold the prizes for number one and tell him he only gets prizes when he does the big number 2 in the potty.
7. Run out for a bottle/box/bucket/whatever of wine as you run out of clean underwear and have a pile of laundry yet again.
8. Bite your tongue as you hear "I already did in my pants". Take a shot and swear that you will be encouraging.
9. Let the kid run naked to discourage random accidents. Make him sit on the potty until you feel bad and his feet are asleep. Regret the naked decision when he wants to show you the butterfly while still not wearing pants.
10. Curse the second box of pull-ups, diapers sure would be cheaper. Tell your son they are special training pants. Try to ignore the knowing smirk he offers you in exchange.
11.  Cry out in shame and feel like a failure as you prepare yourself to have the only kindergartner that is still in diapers. Then cry when you realize they won't let him in and he will have to be home-schooled.

10 of you are the "cool kids":

Oh the joys of potty training. It took me forever with my oldest son. Middle kiddo wasn't so bad. I was hoping that Baby Girl would be born potty trained, but no such luck. Anyways, don't worry, he'll get the hang of it in time. Have another glass of wine and don't worry about it :)

Family lore has it that I told my mother I would quit messing my pants on Easter, and I did.
Sorry I don't remember and can tell you how it worked for me.

Hang in there. He will get it! It took my daughter over a year -- with several stops and restarts, lots of frustration (not always well hidden) on my part. But suddenly one day she was potty trained (daytime) and within a month was staying dry all night, too. I've been at it with my son for just about six months. We've been stalled at the point where he'll go when asked, but doesn't initiate on his own (and if he says "I have to go" it has meant he has already gone in his pants). But we've had a great couple of days, so I'm hoping he's finally getting it. ..... This is not one of the stages I'll miss!
